OK, I’m becoming addicted to light strips. You can cram them everywhere around your house (well, not outside), apply millions of colors, and integrate them seamlessly into any Smart Home. I love ’em and apparently I’m not the only one.
Why would you want light strips? Well, for me, it’s about mood lighting and night lights. For example, for movie night, I have a light strip behind the TV that offers some nice, dim, ambiance to the room. My next project will be to add them to my office and possibly the kitchen. Who knows, but I’m getting the itch.

Hue Lightstrips
Right now, there are two primary players in Smart Home light strip space – Hue and LIFX. Hue offers the Lightstrip Plus ($90 for 6.6 feet). Make sure you get the Plus – t’s a vast improvement over first generation.
LIFX offers the LIFX Z. You can pre-order the Z lights today and get them sometime in November ($90 for 2 meters).
After I get my Zs, I’ll test them against the Hues. What’s interesting to me is that LIFX offers zone colors. Meaning, you can create 8 unique color zones for every meter of length. THAT is something that will really seperate the two, in my opinion.
See you back here in a few weeks when my Hue Striplights go head-to-head with LIFX!
